Tagdilt Track

Stony desert plateau famous among European birdwatchers

A dusty piste running south from Boumalne across the stony desert toward the Jbel Saghro, the Tagdilt Track has been a pilgrimage spot for European birdwatchers since the 1970s. The reason is simple: it is one of the best places in Morocco to see four species of desert larks (Temminck's, thick-billed, hoopoe, and bar-tailed) in a single morning, along with cream-coloured coursers, trumpeter finches, red-rumped wheatears, and sandgrouse coming to water.

The "track" is really a road through hammada — flat black gravel desert with scattered camel-thorn — and a 10-km stretch is usually enough. Birds are most active in the first two hours after sunrise; bring a scope, sturdy shoes, and water. A guide is not essential but helps: hotels in town can arrange one. A 4WD vehicle is preferred for the rougher side tracks.

The signposted turn off the main highway is about 1 km south of town, at the foot of the hill.
