Vallée des Oiseaux

Quiet side valley off the Dadès for walking and birdwatching

A narrower side valley about 7 km up the Dadès Gorge, the Vallée des Oiseaux ("Valley of Birds") is a quieter walking alternative to the main gorge road. A small stream runs through a green strip of poplars, almond trees, and walnut groves, with red rock walls rising steeply on either side and Berber villages perched on the slopes above.

As the French name suggests, it is a good spot for birds — bee-eaters, hoopoes, redstarts, and several Mediterranean migrants in spring and autumn. But the appeal is mostly the silence: there are no tour buses, no souvenir stalls, just farm work and the sound of running water.

The road in is rough — a 4WD or a high-clearance taxi from Boumalne is wise. A two-hour walk up the valley and back is more rewarding than the equivalent stretch of the main gorge.
