A squat watchtower on a low hill a few kilometres east of the town, built by the French Foreign Legion in the 1930s as a lookout over the Ziz Valley and the surrounding palmery. The tower itself is locked but the climb up the hill is the point — at the top you get the wide view of Erfoud against the green band of the Tafilalet oasis, with the Saharan emptiness rolling off to the south.
Best at sunrise or just before sunset. Take a taxi out or walk if you have an hour; the road climbs gently from the town centre and is easy in cool weather. Be cautious of glass and rubble around the abandoned base.
