Surf-battered gun fort linked to Hendrix legend

The half-collapsed eighteenth-century gun fort at the southern end of Essaouira Beach, slowly being eaten by the surf. Local lore — and the cover of every Hendrix album sold in the souks — credits it as the inspiration for "Castles Made of Sand." Hendrix did pass through in 1969, though the song was already recorded; the story sticks anyway. An easy walk down the beach from town, best at low tide.
