Getting Around

Essaouira is a walking town. Everything in the medina is within ten minutes of everything else, and the main drag — Avenue de l'Istiqlal — runs straight from Bab Doukkala in the north down to the port. At the clocktower, Place Chefchaouni, a side street leads to the central square Place Moulay Hassan, with the Skala ramparts and the kasbah just behind. The beach starts immediately south of the medina walls.

Cars are not allowed inside the medina. If you arrive by bus or grand taxi you'll be dropped just outside Bab Doukkala; petit taxis (blue) run the short distances around the new town for a few dirhams. To reach Sidi Kaouki (25km south) or Moulay Bouzerktoun (25km north), grand taxis leave when full from the bus station, or you can hire a taxi for the day.
