The Port

Morocco's busiest sardine port with blue boats and quayside grills

Essaouira's working fishing port is the busiest in Morocco for sardines and one of the most photogenic in the country, packed with hundreds of identical bright blue wooden boats. Come in the late afternoon when the fleet returns: nets are mended on the quay, gulls dive for scraps, and the open-air grills at the entrance fire up. Walk past the boats to the small stone fortress, the Skala du Port, for a tower view across the harbour.
