Michlifen Ski Resort

Morocco's main ski resort at 2,100m in the Middle Atlas

Michlifen sits about five kilometres from Ifrane at an elevation of 2,100 metres, making it Morocco's main ski resort. The infrastructure is modest — a handful of runs, ski rental shops, and a popular café — but the experience of skiing in North Africa is genuinely remarkable. The season runs roughly December through February, with snowfall variable year to year; in a good winter the slopes are properly powdery.

In summer, Michlifen is a pleasant walking destination. The crater of the extinct volcano it occupies forms a natural bowl, and the cedar forest on the slopes is beautiful. The resort is easily reached by taxi from Ifrane; agree on a price before you get in.

A story
The existence of skiing in Morocco reliably astounds first-time visitors. Michlifen sits at 2,100 metres in the Middle Atlas, and in a good winter it receives genuine powder snow. Moroccan families make the trip from Fès and Meknès; you can ski in the morning and be back in the medina for dinner.
