Toubkal Refuge

High-altitude mountain hut at 3,207m, base for the Toubkal summit

The Toubkal Refuge (Refuge du Toubkal) at 3,207 metres is the standard overnight stop on the route to the summit. Most trekkers arrive here on the afternoon of their first day from Imlil — a four-to-five hour walk via Aroumd — and set off for the summit before dawn the following morning. The hut is run by the Club Alpin Français and has dormitory beds, hot meals, and a guardian who can advise on conditions.

In peak season (July and August) the refuge fills quickly; booking in advance is wise. The terrace in the late afternoon, with the South Cwm rising behind and the shadows lengthening over the scree, is one of the better views in the Atlas. There is a second refuge, the Neltner, nearby — both are regularly used and the approach from Imlil is the same.

A story
The refuge was built in the 1930s by the Club Alpin Français and has been rebuilt twice since. During the 2023 earthquake it suffered structural damage and required significant repairs — a reminder that the High Atlas sits on an active fault zone.
