The High Atlas around Imlil rewards exploration beyond the Toubkal circuit. Oukaïmeden, Morocco's main ski resort, sits on a plateau 25 kilometres east at 2,650 metres and is reachable by piste or road. The Ourika Valley to the east is a gentler day out — a lush river gorge with waterfalls and Berber villages popular with day-trippers from Marrakesh. The city itself, 60 kilometres north, is the obvious base for anyone combining mountain trekking with the medina and souks.
