Meknes is ideally placed for two of Morocco's great day trips.
Volubilis, 30 kilometres north, is the best-preserved Roman city in Morocco and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Mosaics survive in situ on the floors of villas, and the triumphal arch and forum are remarkably intact. The site is best visited in the morning before tour groups arrive and before the summer heat becomes intense. A shared taxi from Meknes takes about 45 minutes.
Fez is only an hour away by train or bus, and the combination of the two Imperial Cities in a single day or overnight trip is entirely manageable. Fez is larger and more complex, but Meknes makes a more relaxed base — quieter, cheaper, and less demanding.
