Meknes divides into two distinct areas: the 17th-century Imperial City built by Sultan Moulay Ismail, south and east of the medina, and the older medina itself with its souks and religious buildings. A half-day is enough for each. The Roman ruins of Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lie 30 km north and are an easy day trip.
