Bab Sidi Abdelwahab

Bab Sidi Abdelwahab is the most architectural of the medina's gates, a heavy crenellated portal with twin towers facing the modern town outside the old walls. It marks the principal eastern entrance to the medina, just off Place du 16 Août. The square outside is a popular meeting place; the cafes around it stay open late.

A story
For centuries this gate was known as Bab er-Reha — 'the heads gate' — because the Sultan's authorities displayed the severed heads of executed rebels on its spikes as a warning to the population. The name was quietly changed in the nineteenth century.
