The hillsides around Oukaimeden are scattered with prehistoric rock carvings — one of the largest and most accessible concentrations of ancient rock art in North Africa. The carvings are pecked into exposed rock surfaces and depict animals, human figures, weapons, and geometric symbols. Among the most remarkable are representations of elephants, long-horned cattle, and ibex, some of the figures more than a metre across.
The carvings are reached by walking from the resort village onto the rocky slopes to the south and east. A local guide is helpful — some of the best carvings are not immediately obvious and a guide will know where to look. The site requires no entry fee and is open at all times. The best light for photography is in the morning or late afternoon. Bring water and appropriate footwear, as the terrain is rocky.
