High Atlas ski village at 2,600 metres, where Moroccan mountain culture meets North Africa's highest slopes.
Oukaimeden is Africa's highest ski resort, sitting at around 2,600 metres in the High Atlas mountains, just 90 minutes from Marrakech. It draws a quirky mix of Moroccan families, French expats, and curious travellers who find it hard to believe you can ski in North Africa. The runs aren't long or technically demanding — this is more novelty than serious skiing — but the setting, with Atlas peaks all around and a village that feels genuinely Moroccan, is unlike any other ski resort on the continent. Ski and snowboard equipment is available to rent at the base.
Outside of ski season (roughly December through March), the plateau and surrounding trails make for excellent hiking and mountain biking. The area also has some of the oldest rock carvings in Africa, scattered across the surrounding hillsides — depictions of elephants, ibex, and cattle from a time when the Atlas climate was far wetter. The Oukaimeden Observatory on the plateau takes advantage of the high-altitude clear skies, and the night sky here is among the best in Morocco. The Tacheddirt Valley below the resort connects to the wider High Atlas trekking network and the approaches to Jebel Toubkal.

Getting There
Oukaimeden is 74 km south of Marrakech by a mountain road that climbs from the Ourika Valley. By car or taxi the drive takes about 90 minutes from the city. The road is well surfaced to the resort but the upper sections are steep and winding — a four-wheel drive vehicle is advisable in snow conditions, and the road may be closed entirely after heavy snowfall.
Grand taxis from Marrakech's Bab er-Rob taxi stand run to the Ourika Valley, from where shared taxis continue up to Oukaimeden in ski season. In summer the public transport connection is less reliable. Many visitors arrange day-trip transport through a Marrakech riad or travel agency, which handles the logistics and keeps the option open to stop at villages in the Ourika Valley on the way up or down.

When to Go
The ski season runs from December through March, though reliable snow cover varies from year to year. At this latitude and altitude, the snowfield can be excellent or thin depending on precipitation — it is worth checking conditions before making the drive from Marrakech specifically for skiing. The best ski conditions are typically in January and February.
Outside ski season, the plateau is accessible from April through November and makes an excellent escape from the Marrakech heat. In summer the temperature at 2,600 metres is 15–20 degrees cooler than in the city. The road can be impassable in heavy snow; check conditions in winter if travelling by car. Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) offer ideal hiking weather.
