Asgaour Sunday Souk

The weekly Sunday market at Asgaour (also spelled Asni or referred to as Souk Tnine de l'Ourika in some older guides) is one of the most authentic rural souks near Marrakesh. Berber farmers and traders from throughout the upper valley and surrounding mountains converge here to sell and buy livestock, produce, spices, household goods, and clothing.

It is a working market, not a tourist attraction — the stalls are set up for locals, and most of the activity involves bargaining over grain, chickens, or a new djellaba rather than handicrafts. That is precisely what makes it worth stopping for. Come in the morning when the activity is at its peak.

If you are driving yourself, pull well off the road before walking in — the market spills onto the verge and traffic slows to a crawl on Sunday mornings.
