Kef el-Moumen Caves

The Kef el-Moumen caves lie in the hills south of Sefrou, and contain ancient rock-cut tombs. Local tradition holds that one of them is the tomb of the biblical prophet Daniel — a claim that places Sefrou in the same company as several other Moroccan towns that make similar assertions about various prophets, and which should be taken accordingly.

What is less contested is that the caves are genuinely old and worth a visit for anyone interested in the pre-Islamic and early Islamic history of this part of Morocco. The surrounding hillside has good views toward Sefrou and the edge of the Middle Atlas. Getting there requires a guide or local directions — the caves are not well-signposted and the track is not obvious.

The area around Sefrou is rich in this kind of historical overlay: Berber, Jewish, Arab, French, and Andalusian communities have all passed through, and the landscape carries traces of each.
