Sefrou sits at 850 metres in the foothills of the Middle Atlas, which makes it noticeably cooler and more pleasant in summer than Fes, 30 km to the north. Spring and autumn are ideal — temperatures are mild, the countryside is green, and the waterfalls above town are running.
The best reason to time your visit carefully is the Cherry Festival (Festival des Cerises), held every June. The surrounding area is famous for its cherry orchards, and the festival — originally launched in the 1920s and now UNESCO-endorsed — is a proper community event: beauty pageant, folk music performances, fantasia (a traditional equestrian display), and a general air of celebration. Moroccans come from across the region, and accommodation fills up quickly.
Winter can be cold, and light snow in the hills is not unusual, but the town is perfectly manageable and practically empty of visitors.
