Bab Zitouna

Bab Zitouna ("Gate of the Olive Tree") is one of the secondary gates in the medina walls of Taza, offering a different perspective on the valley below than the better-known Bab Er Rih. Like the other wall gates, it dates primarily from Almohade construction in the 12th century, with later reinforcements added by the Merinid and Saadid dynasties.

The gate sits in a section of wall that has survived in reasonable condition, and the area around it is less visited than the main medina landmarks. Walking between Bab Zitouna and Bab Er Rih along the top of the walls, where the path allows, gives a good sense of the defensive logic of the site and the scale of the fortifications. The views down the valley from the wall's western face are among the best in the medina.
