Tour Es-Sarragine

Tour Es-Sarragine ("Saracen Tower") stands at the western extremity of the Taza medina walls and is architecturally unusual: it is square at the base and circular at the top, a combination that reflects different construction phases or possibly two separate towers built adjacent to each other over centuries. It provides a vantage point over the western approach to the city and across towards the Middle Atlas.

The tower is in poor repair — sections are crumbling — but the overall structure is intact enough to visit. It is one of the landmarks along the outer medina wall circuit, accessible on the path that follows the fortifications around the western and southern edges of Taza-Haut. Combined with Bab Er Rih and the other western gates, it forms part of the best-preserved section of the Almohade-era fortifications.
