Inhambane has a small airport with connections to Maputo (around 45 minutes by air). LAM (Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique) operates this route. By road, Inhambane is accessible from the EN1 (the main north-south highway); the junction is at Maxixe, across the bay. From Maputo, the drive to Maxixe takes around 5–6 hours on a reasonably good road.
From Maxixe, the traditional way to cross to Inhambane is by dhow — a 20-minute crossing that costs almost nothing and is far more scenic than the motorised ferry. The motorised ferry is faster and runs on a schedule (roughly every 30 minutes in daylight hours). Shared minibuses (chapas) run frequently from Inhambane town to Tofo Beach (30 minutes) and to Vilankulo to the north.
