You move through Etosha entirely by car. Visitors are not permitted to leave their vehicles except at designated rest camps, picnic sites, and viewpoints. This is not merely a rule — lions, elephants, and rhinos are common on the roads, and the distances between camps are large enough that a breakdown on foot would be serious.
The park operates a simple system: you must be within a rest camp's fences by sunset, and gates open again at sunrise. This means planning your day around the distances between waterholes and the gates, which enforces a certain discipline but also means the roads are quiet at dawn and dusk — the best wildlife hours.
Fuel is available at Okaukuejo and Namutoni. Halali does not have a fuel station, so plan accordingly. Phone signal is unreliable throughout the park; download maps and bookings before you enter.
