Etosha has four entrance gates. The main one for self-drive visitors from Windhoek is the Anderson Gate in the south, near the town of Outjo. The journey from Windhoek takes about four hours on good tarmac roads. The Von Lindequist Gate in the east, near Tsumeb, is used by those approaching from the north.
There is no scheduled public transport to Etosha — a car is essential. Most visitors either drive their own vehicle or rent one in Windhoek. The roads within the park are gravel but well-maintained and suitable for ordinary sedans in the dry season; high clearance is helpful but not required for most routes.
Etosha is not accessible independently on a budget. All accommodation must be booked in advance through Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR), and camping pitches fill months ahead during peak season. Booking six months in advance for the dry season is not excessive.
