When to Go

Lüderitz is one of the windiest towns in Africa — the South Atlantic wind funnels relentlessly into the bay almost year-round. There is no ideal season; wind is constant. The mildest months are March to May and September to November, when temperatures are in the 15–20°C range and the wind drops slightly from its winter intensity. Summer (December to February) can bring brief warm days but also the strongest onshore winds.

The cold Benguela Current keeps coastal temperatures cool year-round and brings rich upwelling that sustains the crayfish and bird populations. Fog is common from the sea, particularly in the mornings. For photography at Kolmanskop, the morning light from June to August is exceptional — clear, sharp, and gold.

Lüderitz is isolated: the nearest town of any size is Aus (120 km east), and the road to Windhoek is long (780 km) and crosses one of Africa's emptiest stretches of desert. Fuel up before leaving in any direction.
