Etosha National Park begins about 100km north of Outjo at the Anderson Gate, one of three gates into the park. The drive north on the C38 takes about 90 minutes on good gravel road. Outjo is the last proper town before the gate and the right place to fill your tank, buy food and water, and check that you have everything needed for time in the park.
Etosha itself is one of Africa's great wildlife parks — centred on a vast salt pan that can be seen from space, with waterholes around its edges that attract elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah, black and white rhino, and extraordinary concentrations of gemsbok, zebra, and wildebeest. The park roads are well-maintained gravel, self-drive is the norm, and the NWR rest camps (Okaukuejo, Halali, Namutoni) are reliable if basic. Book accommodation in advance.
