Outjo Museum

Small local history museum covering the German colonial period, the Herero and Nama wars, and Outjo's development

The Outjo Museum occupies a small colonial-era building in the town centre and covers the history of the region from the Herero and Nama peoples through the German colonial period and into the 20th century. The collection includes colonial-era photographs, Herero artefacts, farming equipment, and documents from the period of German South West Africa.

The museum is small and unmissable in size, but it gives genuine context for the landscape you're driving through. The German colonial presence in Namibia lasted only 30 years (1884–1915) but its effects — the architecture, the farming practices, the place names, the genocide against the Herero and Nama peoples — shaped the country profoundly. Entry is cheap and the staff are helpful.
