The Rhenish Mission Church on 5th Road is the oldest building in Walvis Bay, a small whitewashed church with a simple gable end and a single bell tower built by the German Rhenish Mission Society in 1899. The mission served the Topnaar Nama people who had lived in the lower Kuiseb valley long before the Germans or the British arrived; the congregation continues to use the building for services on Sundays.
The interior is plain — wooden pews, a small organ, painted wooden ceiling — but the architecture is a quietly affecting relic of the colonial mission era. The church is generally locked outside service hours but can be visited by arrangement with the parish office on the same block.
