The Benguela current keeps Walvis Bay cool year-round — temperatures rarely rise above 25°C even in summer or drop below 10°C in winter. The cold Atlantic also generates heavy morning fog that usually burns off by midday but can occasionally linger and disrupt boat tours.
Birdwatching is good year-round but the lagoon is at its absolute peak from October to March when flamingos breed and migrant waders arrive in massive numbers. Whales (humpback and southern right) pass the coast between August and October. The desert is best avoided in midsummer afternoons (December to February) when the sand becomes unbearably hot; otherwise, all seasons are pleasant. The wind picks up most afternoons, sometimes uncomfortably, especially September to November.
