The Raft

Waterfront restaurant on stilts in the lagoon

The Raft is a Walvis Bay institution: a wooden restaurant built on stilts over the lagoon, reached by a long timber walkway from the shore at the end of Atlantic Street. The dining room has wraparound windows giving uninterrupted views of the lagoon and the dunes beyond; flamingos, pelicans and seals are regular visitors to the water immediately below.

The menu leans seafood — fresh Lüderitz oysters (the cold Atlantic produces excellent ones), kingklip, hake, calamari — and there are decent steaks and a respectable wine list for those who don't want fish. Prices are at the top end for Namibia (mains around N$200–300) but it is the obvious choice for a special lunch or sunset dinner, especially with a window table. Reservations recommended.

A story
The restaurant is reached by a long timber walkway from the shore and sits over the water of the lagoon on wooden stilts. Pelicans and flamingos sometimes feed metres from the dining tables, an unusual lunchtime companion.
