Walvis Bay Port

Namibia's main deep-water harbour

The Port of Walvis Bay is the only natural deep-water harbour on Namibia's 1,500-km coastline and the country's main commercial port. Built up in fits and starts since the late 19th century — first by the British, then the Germans, then back to South Africa, and finally to Namibia in 1994 — it now handles container traffic, refrigerated fish exports, and bulk minerals from the mines in the interior. The port has been significantly expanded since 2014, with a new container terminal built on reclaimed land.

The working areas are not open to the public but the public quay at the north end of the harbour gives a good view of the cranes, container ships, and the trawler fleet. Several restaurants on the waterfront make the most of the view. Photographers will find the colourful stacks of containers a good subject.
