Kayaking with Seals

Half-day sea kayak tour through the Cape fur seal colony

Eco Marine Kayak Tours run guided half-day paddles from Pelican Point through the inner lagoon and out among the Cape fur seal colony. The seals are curious and unafraid; once you're in the water it is not unusual for a dozen to investigate your kayak from a metre away, popping their heads above the surface to peer in. Dolphins frequently come past in pods of ten or twenty.

The kayaks are stable open-cockpit doubles, no experience necessary, and the tour leaders are excellent on the local wildlife. Tours leave around 8 am, return by lunch, and include hot drinks, snacks, and a brief safety lesson. Cost around N$800 per person; suitable for kids of around 10 and up. Warm clothes and a windproof jacket essential — the water is cold and the wind constant.
