The Walvis Bay waterfront promenade runs for several kilometres along Atlantic Street on the inner edge of the lagoon. It is the heart of the town's everyday outdoor life: joggers in the morning, families and kite-fliers in the afternoon, fish-and-chip eaters at sunset. The promenade is paved, flat, well-lit, and one of the safest urban walks in Namibia.
The birds are the great pleasure. Flamingos feed within metres of the path; pelicans drift overhead; gulls and cormorants line the pilings. The waterfront also has a cluster of restaurants, a small craft market that sets up at weekends, and benches every hundred metres. Easy to walk from one end of town to the other this way.
