Niger is landlocked and not straightforward to reach. Most visitors fly into Niamey and sort out onward travel from there.
Note on security: As of 2025, the security situation in Niger is severely deteriorated following the July 2023 military coup. Multiple governments have issued Do Not Travel advisories. Check your government's current travel advisory before making any plans.
By Air
Diori Hamani International Airport (NIM) in Niamey is Niger's only international airport. Airlines currently serving Niamey include Air Algérie, ASKY Airlines, Air Côte d'Ivoire, Ethiopian Airlines, Royal Air Maroc, Tunisair, and Turkish Airlines. Turkish Airlines offers the only direct connection to the Middle East and is useful for travelers coming from Asia or connecting via Istanbul. From Europe, Paris and Casablanca (Royal Air Maroc) are the most common routing points.
There are no direct flights from North America. Most travelers connect through Paris, Casablanca, Istanbul, Addis Ababa, or Abidjan.
By Land
Niger shares borders with Algeria, Libya, Mali, Burkina Faso, Benin, Nigeria, and Chad. Overland crossings are possible in theory but the security situation along most borders makes them hazardous. The crossing from Nigeria via Birnin Konni or Zinder into Kano has historically been the most used overland route. The trans-Saharan routes north to Algeria (via Arlit) and to Libya are effectively closed to independent travelers due to ongoing insecurity and terrorism risk.
The border with Mali is dangerous. The borders with Burkina Faso and Benin pass through areas with active militant activity.
