In-Gall Market

The weekly market of In-Gall takes place on Wednesdays and is one of the more interesting markets of central Niger — a meeting point of Tuareg from the northern desert, Hausa traders from the south, and Wodaabe Fulani herders. The wares are practical desert goods rather than tourist crafts: dried dates from the oasis groves, salt from Tegidda, indigo cotton from Kano, leather goods, dried meat, millet, and the silver jewellery of the Tuareg smiths.

Outside the September festival the market is small but characteristic. During the Cure Salée it expands to fill the entire open ground south of the town and becomes a months-of-accumulated-trade event that lasts the full week of the festival.
