Niger River Hippo Pirogue Trip

Hire a pirogue to see wild hippos in the river pools south of Niamey

South of Niamey, the Niger River widens into a series of shallow pools and channels that support a healthy hippo population — one of the more improbable wildlife encounters available in a West African capital. Pirogues can be hired from the Corniche or from the riverbanks south of the Kennedy Bridge, and local boatmen know which pools the hippos use and how to approach without startling them.

The trip takes two to three hours on the water and is most rewarding in the dry season, when low water concentrates the animals. Mornings are better than afternoons for sightings — the hippos tend to be more active before the midday heat sets in. Agree a price before you leave and confirm it includes waiting time at the pools. The trip is entirely informal; there is no booking office or official guide system, and haggling is expected. Budget around 15,000 to 25,000 CFA for a boat depending on duration and group size.

A story
The hippo population in the Niger River south of Niamey is one of the few remaining river hippo groups in the Sahel. They are most visible in the dry season (November to May) when the river pools shrink and the animals concentrate in smaller areas. Local pirogue operators know the relevant pools well and can usually get a boat to within thirty metres of a group — close enough that you can hear the huffing and see the ears swivel.
