St Peter's Cathedral in the Ake quarter is the mother church of the Anglican Diocese of Egba and traces its origins to the Reverend Henry Townsend's CMS mission to Abeokuta in 1842 — the same Townsend who built the First Storey Building a few streets away. The original mud-brick chapel was replaced in stages by larger buildings; the present cathedral, a red-brick Gothic Revival church with a tall central tower, dates from a 1898 rebuilding with later 20th-century additions.
The interior has stained-glass windows commissioned in Birmingham in the 1890s and a small collection of memorials to early missionaries and Egba converts. The cathedral remains active and Sunday services in Yoruba are well attended; the choir is excellent. A peaceful place to step into for ten minutes between the more crowded sights of Ake.
