The Ogun River runs through Abeokuta and gives Ogun State its name. A modest riverside park has been laid out along part of the bank near the city centre, with shaded benches, a children's playground, and food vendors at weekends. The river itself is wide and slow at this point, with fishermen casting nets from small wooden canoes — a quintessential southwestern Nigerian scene.
The park is a popular sunset spot for couples and families and is one of the few green spaces in a city that has otherwise grown without much planning. Avoid swimming — the river is unsafe for that — but it is a pleasant short walk and a useful counterpoint to the urban density elsewhere.
