Getting Around

Calabar is one of the easier Nigerian cities to navigate — well laid out, relatively uncongested, and with a reputation for being safer and more orderly than Lagos or Port Harcourt. Taxis are plentiful and should be negotiated in advance. Okadas (motorcycle taxis) are the fastest way to cover short distances but are not recommended for first-time visitors unfamiliar with Nigerian traffic.

The main tourist sites — the Old Residency Museum, the Slave History Museum at Marina Beach, Duke Town, and Mary Slessor's grave — are all within a reasonable distance of each other in the central ridge area. The Drill Ranch is on the outskirts and is best reached by taxi. Walking between sites in the old town is possible and often pleasant in the early morning before the heat builds.
