The Calabar Carnival, held every December, bills itself as Africa's biggest street party — and makes a reasonable case. Launched in 2004 and inspired by Brazilian carnival traditions, it has grown into a week-long event drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors from across Nigeria and beyond. Five competing bands — Seagull (red), Passion 4 (green), Masta Blasta (orange), Bayside (blue), and Freedom (yellow) — parade through the city in increasingly elaborate costumes, each trying to outdo the others in spectacle and showmanship.
Beyond the main parade, the carnival programme includes live music by Nigerian and international artists, boat regattas on the Calabar River, the Ekpe festival of traditional Efik culture, fashion shows, and beauty pageants. If you are in Nigeria in December and have any flexibility in your itinerary, it is worth rearranging your plans to be in Calabar. Book accommodation months in advance — the city fills completely.
