The Osun-Oshogbo Sacred Grove, UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the obvious day trip from Ife. About 30 km north via Oshogbo, the grove is the largest surviving sacred forest in Nigeria and the site of an annual festival in August that draws tens of thousands of worshippers. The bronze sculptures and shrines within it were renovated and expanded in the 1960s by the Austrian artist Susanne Wenger, giving the grove an unusual combination of ancient Yoruba tradition and modern artistic interpretation.
