Assop Falls

Wide curtain waterfall on the road from Jos to Abuja

Assop Falls is one of the better-known waterfalls on the plateau — about 65 km west of Jos on the road to Abuja, in the Bassa local government area. A small river drops about 10 metres over a curtain of black basalt, broader than it is tall, into a pool surrounded by trees. The setting is open and pleasant, with picnic shelters and benches along the rim.

The falls are at their fullest in the rainy season from May to October, when the curtain becomes a single sheet of water. In the dry season the flow shrinks to a series of strands. It is a half-day trip from Jos — go in the morning, ideally combined with the drive on toward Abuja or with another stop on the plateau road. The walk down to the pool is short and easy.
