Jos sits at 1,200 metres on the Jos Plateau in central Nigeria, which makes it noticeably cooler than most of the country — a welcome relief if you've been sweating through the south. The city is the capital of Plateau State and has a relaxed, unhurried atmosphere compared to Lagos or Abuja.
The plateau landscape is striking: rounded granite inselbergs rise from the surrounding savannah, and the area is dotted with streams, dams, and green valleys. It's not dramatic mountain scenery, but it's genuinely pleasant and well worth a couple of days.
The main draw is the Jos Museum Complex — one of the more interesting museum collections in West Africa. The Shere Hills on the edge of town offer easy walking, and the Rock Brewery, if it's running tours, is a sociable afternoon out.
