Day Trips

The Jos Plateau is one of the most distinctive landscapes in Nigeria, and the day trips are part of the reason to come. Riyom Rock — the stacked granite stones once on the 100-naira note — is the obvious one, an easy half-day to the south. Assop Falls on the Abuja road and Kurra Falls to the south-east are both good half- or full-day outings, best in or just after the rainy season.

Longer trips include Wase Rock, the dramatic volcanic plug in the south-east of the state (a full day, with attention to security), and the Pandam Wildlife Park, a less-visited reserve in the lowlands south of the plateau. The old tin-mining country south of Jos — Bukuru, Barkin Ladi, Vom — is interesting in its own right for the post-industrial landscape. As always in Plateau State, take advice on the current security situation before any longer outing.
