Jos Main Market

Vast covered market — once the largest of its kind in West Africa

The Jos Main Market is the commercial heart of the city — an immense covered complex on the western edge of the old town that, when complete, was one of the largest markets in West Africa. The structure was damaged by a series of fires from the early 2000s onwards and parts have been rebuilt; in practice, traders today spread across the surviving covered halls and the surrounding streets.

You will find everything sold in a Nigerian market here — fabric, foodstuffs, hardware, electronics, the local tin and bead jewellery, baskets from the surrounding plateau villages. It is busy and chaotic. Go in the morning, leave valuables at the hotel, and take a local guide if you can — the geography of the market is hard to read until someone shows you how it works.

A story
The Jos Main Market opened in 1975 as the largest covered market in West Africa, with 12,000 stalls under a single roof. It was partially destroyed by fire in 2002 and has since been rebuilt in stages; some sections remain unfinished and traders operate in the surrounding streets.
