Jos Wildlife Park is a fenced wildlife reserve a short drive south of the city centre, one of the few places in Nigeria where you can see African wildlife in something approaching a natural setting. The animals — ostriches, baboons, monkeys, antelope, and a small number of larger residents including lions and elephants — are kept in large semi-natural enclosures rather than cages. The setting on the plateau, with rocky kopjes and savannah grass, is part of the appeal.
It is not the Serengeti — populations are small, and conservation funding has fluctuated — but as an introduction to Nigerian wildlife it is decent, and it makes a good half-day with kids. Guided tours by 4×4 are available if you would rather not drive your own car through. The park is busiest at weekends with Jos families; weekday mornings are quieter.
