Kajuru Castle

Kajuru Castle is a medieval-style castle resort about 60 kilometres southeast of Kaduna in the rocky hills of Kajuru Local Government Area. Built by a German resident in the 1980s, it is an exact replica of a European fortress: stone towers, battlements, a dungeon, and a working drawbridge. The setting, in wooded hills overlooking a rural landscape, is unexpectedly convincing.

The castle operates as a resort and offers polo, golf, quad biking, swimming, and overnight stays in the castle rooms — which are furnished in keeping with the medieval theme. It is popular with Kaduna's expatriate community and with Nigerian visitors looking for something unusual. Day visits can be arranged but it is more rewarding as an overnight stay. Book well in advance for weekends.

A story
A German expat built the castle in the 1980s, apparently just because he wanted one. He modelled it on medieval European fortresses — complete with turrets, a dungeon, and a drawbridge — and set it in the rocky Kaduna hills. It has since become a resort offering polo, golf, quad biking, and overnight stays in the castle itself. The incongruity is the point: this is a perfectly realised medieval German castle sitting in the Nigerian countryside, and it is completely serious about the premise.
