Things to Do

Kaduna is not a conventional tourist city, but it has a distinctive mix of colonial history, political significance, and living cultural complexity that rewards a day or two of exploration. The colonial-era buildings in the north of the city carry real weight — Lugard Hall is one of the most significant legislative buildings in Nigerian history, and Arewa House is a serious museum of northern Nigerian political heritage. The River Gardens and Lugard Footbridge along the Kaduna River make for a pleasant afternoon. The Central Market is enormous and worth a morning. And if you have transport, Kajuru Castle in the hills south of the city is one of the more inexplicable things in Nigeria — a medieval German fortress, built in the 1980s, that is now a resort.
