Lugard Footbridge and River Gardens

The Lugard Footbridge, now located in the General Hassan Katsina Park along the Kaduna River, is one of the oldest iron structures in northern Nigeria. Built in 1904 and subsequently relocated to Kaduna from the original capital at Zungeru, it is an unassuming piece of colonial-era engineering — iron handrails, wire gauze, concrete pillars — that has survived more than a century and several changes of political purpose.

The park around the bridge, known as the River Gardens, makes for a pleasant afternoon. There is a swimming pool, benches along the riverbank, and a calm atmosphere that is a genuine contrast to the city's busier streets. The old footbridge adds a melancholy historical texture to what is otherwise a local leisure spot.

A story
The footbridge was originally built in 1904 at Zungeru, then the capital of the Northern Protectorate, and later dismantled and relocated to Kaduna when the capital was moved in 1911. It is a piece of infrastructure that has moved with the government — which gives it an odd secondary status as a relic not just of a time but of a place that no longer exists in the same form. Zungeru itself is now a small town in Niger State, little known outside Nigeria, while the bridge it built sits in Kaduna's General Hassan Katsina Park.
