Lugard Hall is the most significant colonial-era building in Kaduna and one of the more impressive in northern Nigeria. Built in 1914 as the seat of the Northern Nigeria administration, it sits at the centre of a circular road in the northern part of the city, and its imposing facade and formal grounds make it look exactly like what it is: a building designed to project authority.
The hall was the site of major political decisions throughout the colonial and post-independence periods. It served as the seat of the Northern Nigerian legislature in the First Republic and the legislature again during the Second Republic from 1979 to 1983. Today it functions as the Kaduna State House of Assembly chambers, so access to the interior is limited, but the exterior and grounds are visible from the road. The nearby Murtala Square gives a good view of the building in its urban context.
