Port Harcourt Pleasure Park

The Port Harcourt Pleasure Park is a large recreational area on the western edge of the city, situated on the bank of the Bonny River. The park covers a substantial area of landscaped grounds and riverfront, and on weekends it fills with families, joggers, and young couples. There are amusement rides, boat rides on the river, and several informal food and drink stalls scattered through the grounds.

The riverfront location is the real draw — you can watch canoes and fishing boats moving along the Bonny River while the mangrove forest of the opposite bank stretches into the distance. It gives a rare feeling of openness in a city that is otherwise dense and congested. The park is best visited in the late afternoon when the light on the water is good and the heat has eased.

A story
The Pleasure Park was developed as part of a government push to give Port Harcourt's working population recreational space close to the city centre. It became iconic in the 1970s oil-boom years when the city's rapidly expanding middle class adopted it as the place for weekend picnics and outdoor concerts, making it one of the earliest examples of public-leisure planning in a Nigerian industrial city.
