Yakubu Gowon Stadium

Yakubu Gowon Stadium is the main sports venue of Port Harcourt, located in the Elekahia suburb. It is a multi-purpose stadium that hosts football matches for Rivers United FC, one of Nigeria's top professional clubs, as well as athletics events and major public gatherings. The stadium holds around 30,000 spectators.

Catching a Rivers United match here is one of the more authentic Nigerian experiences Port Harcourt can offer. The atmosphere at big games is electric, with drumming, singing, and the kind of theatrical crowd behaviour that Nigerian football is known for. Check local listings for fixture dates — matches are typically held on weekend afternoons and the surrounding streets fill with food vendors and supporters for hours before kickoff.

A story
The stadium was originally called Liberation Stadium when it was built in the 1960s — the name reflected the political mood of post-independence Nigeria. It was renamed after General Yakubu Gowon, the military head of state who presided over the end of the Biafra War and championed the "no victor, no vanquished" policy of post-war reconciliation. Renaming it after Gowon in a region that had been deeply affected by that war was a pointed political gesture.
